NEWS:
*Cowiche Canyon Conservancy very much appreciates our diverse and wonderful neighbors who care deeply about and help our mission. CCC Facebook page is a good format for general conservancy news. As a rule, we will not post comments on CCC Facebook about private land use issues:
A note on the forum regarding the land use in the lower Cowiche Creek - private property owners along the creek are empowered to manage their lands within local and state zoning rules. Landowner disuputes are as old as the basalt hills that surround the canyon, and the best place to assert your view of acceptable land use practices is to take part as citizens in county comprehensive planning. We don't own the land where the Yakima owners are working their small patch of locally grown hops, but are being pulled into this discussion. We are open to critques and suggestions for how we manage our lands, which leads to improvments in our operations. We are also seeking important dialogue about conservation, recreation and education within the culture and context of our community. We are reluctant, however, to house a forum on landowner dispute. We hope for a reasoned outcome for this dispute, but are not party to it. There are many agricultural uses all along Cowiche Creek, and we are embedded in a working lands environment, which we find very positive. Our purchase of Snow Mountain Ranch, a premier habitat and recreation site for Yakima was done in partnership with both the conservation and the agricultural community. We do offer education to all who ask on how to conserve and restore, and practice restoration on our own land.
